Subgrade Prep
One of the most important factors in every pavement design is the strength of the subgrade. The subgrade material should meet all applicable requirements for moisture content, density and smoothness. Test rolling, compaction and accurate preparation of the finished subgrade is essential. Any weak areas should be dug out, repaired and retested. The subgrade must provide a firm foundation before the asphalt paving commences.
Graded Aggregate Base
Before the asphalt layer is placed on the graded aggregate base (GAB), often referred to as "crush and run", that material should meet all the requirements for moisture content, compaction and smoothness. If the condition of the base material is stable and dry, and does not deflect and indent significantly under the wheels of a loaded tandem axle dump truck, placement of the new asphalt mix may start. If the condition of the GAB is not satisfactory the base course should be reworked or stabilized to the proper condition for overlay.

The Petromat System consists of Amoco’s Petromat non-woven polypropylene fabric which is field saturated with an asphalt cement tack coat. When placed between pavement layers, the Petromat system becomes an integral part of the roadway section, forming a barrier to water infiltration and absorbing stresses to reduce reflective and fatigue cracking of the new asphalt surface layer.
